Nugent Records History As Women's Soccer Draws USJ

NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Saint Joseph (Conn.) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field.

With the result the Raiders move to 8-4-5 (8-1-3 GNAC) while the Blue Jays now stand at 5-9-2 (5-5-2 GNAC).

The game was evenly matched in the opening moments, with possession changing hands frequently. Despite the Raiders being outshot 6-3 in the first half, they held the best scoring opportunity when freshman Nadia Laxa sent a dangerous ball to the back post. Several Raiders came close but narrowly missed the goal, and the ball eventually rolled out of bounds for a goal kick.

In the second half, Rivier dominated possession, outshooting Saint Joseph (Conn.), 7-4. However, the Raiders continued to face difficulty breaking down the Blue Jay back-line. The Raiders' best opportunity came in the 84th minute when freshman Lily Garey-Wright threaded a pass through to senior Olivia Maxwell, but the Blue Jay goalkeeper saved from close range.

Junior goalkeeper Bri Nugent set a new program record with her four saves and shutout performance, moving into first place for the most shutouts in a season with seven.

The Raiders return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23 in a conference matchup against JWU (Providence) at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
