STANDISH, Maine. – The Rivier women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Saint Joseph's (Me.) on Saturday afternoon at the SJC Athletics Complex, staying undefeated in GNAC play.
The victory marked the Raiders' seventh consecutive conference win, boosting their record to 7-3-3 overall (7-0-1 GNAC), while the Monks dropped to 1-10-1 (1-7-1 GNAC).
Rivier's lone shot on goal in the first half came in the 26th minute, and it was all they needed to break the deadlock. First-year defender Nadia Laxa stepped up to take a free kick from 25 yards out, finessing the ball off the left post and into the side netting to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Both teams had their share of scoring chances in the second half, but neither could find the breakthrough. The Raiders and Monks each tallied six shots after the break, but the score remained locked at 1-0.
Junior goalkeeper Bri Nugent was instrumental in holding the lead, recording seven saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
The Raiders will look to extend their conference unbeaten streak when they take on Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Kelsey Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
