Women's Soccer Triumphs Over Mitchell

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Rivier women's soccer team blanked Mitchell in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field, 2-0.

The win marked the first shutout of the year for the Raiders. With the victory, the Raiders advanced to 2-2-2 (2-0-1 GNAC) and the Mariners dropped to 0-3-0 (0-3-0 GNAC).

The Raiders were on the attack early, ultimately finding the back of the net in the 21st minute when graduate midfielder Darcy Wright notched her first Raider goal by heading home a corner at the back post that was played in by first-year back Nadia Laxa. Rivier outshot the Mariners, 11-3, in the first half with five shots landing on goal.

Rivier continued to apply pressure in the second frame and found a second goal when first-year attacker Julia Acampora collected a pass from Laxa, dribbled past the goalkeeper, and placed her shot into the bottom right corner to record her first collegiate goal in the 56th minute to see the game out at 2-0.

The Raiders outshot the Mariners, 27-3, with Rivier putting 17 shots on target compared to Mitchell's two.

Junior goalkeeper Bri Nugent recorded two saves in the match.

The Raiders look to build on their winning streak at home on Wednesday, Sept. 18 in a non-conference tilt against Nichols at Merrill Field. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m.
