WORCESTER, Mass. – The Rivier women's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie after 65 minutes of Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action Friday night against Worcester St. at the DCU Center but ultimately fell in a shootout.
As a result, the Raiders moved to 8-8-1 (5-2-1 MASCAC), while the Lancers moved to 9-8-1 (6-2-1 MASCAC).
After a back-and-forth scoreless first period, Worcester St. got out to a 2-0 lead just 5:27 into the second period. The Raiders countered just over the halfway mark of the frame as sophomore Rebecca McKelvey potted two goals over a 1:34 span to tie the game up. Her first came by way of an intercepted pass turned breakaway goal to cut Worcester St.'s lead to one at 10:10. Her second came just 94 seconds later as first-year Keegan McGaheran forced a turnover into the slot which McKelvey fired home to make the score 2-2.
The Lancers started to pull away offensively, outshooting Rivier 12-5 in the third period, but never found the back of the net, sending the game to overtime. Neither team could light the lamp during the free hockey period, sending the game into a shootout.
Worcester St. found the back of the net first, but McKelvey converted on her chance in the second round. The Lancers sealed the deal on their final attempt and took the shootout, 2-1, to secure the extra point in the conference standings.
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Symmes logged 38 saves in the matchup.
The Raiders return to action on Friday, Feb. 7 to take on MASCAC foe Anna Maria. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:40 p.m. at Buffone Arena.
