NASHUA, N.H. – Behind a two-goal effort from senior forward Breezy Parent, the Rivier women's ice hockey team secured a 2-0 victory over Mass. Liberal Arts (MCLA) in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Tuesday afternoon at Conway Arena.
With the win the Raiders improved to 10-9-1 (7-3-1 MASCAC) while the Trailblazers dropped to 9-11-0 (3-7-0 MASCAC).
After 34 minutes of scoreless play, Rivier broke the deadlock. Junior forward Jessica Driscoll played the puck to sophomore forward Rebecca McKelvey behind the net. McKelvey then skated past three MCLA defenders and fired into the path of Parent, who redirected it past the MCLA goaltender, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Parent added a second goal early in the third period. A shot from senior defenderGrace Arsenault slipped behind the MCLA goaltender, and Parent was in the right place to push the puck into the net, extending Rivier's lead to 2-0 with 17:30 remaining in the contest.
Senior goaltender Rachel Symmes recorded 31 saves in the shutout and improved her season record to 3-3-1. As a team, the Raiders outshot the Trailblazers 39-31 and took control in the face-off circle, winning 33 draws to MCLA's 27.
The Raiders return to MASCAC play on Friday, Feb. 14, as they host Framingham St. at Conway Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
