Nichols Skates Past Men’s Hockey

BOSTON, MA: The Rivier men's hockey team fell in the opening game of the Boston Landing Tournament against Nichols College this afternoon.  

THE BASICS:

- Date: 1/7/2023              

- Score: Nichols 4, Rivier

- Records: Nichols (5-7), Rivier (5-8-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Bison got the scoring started in the first period on a power play goal 15:19 in by Gabe Temple. Temple had help from Owen Gonter and Kaiden Scott. Nichols would add on another just under a minute later to give the hosting school a 2-0 lead. Scott was credited with the goal.  

- The Raiders would be the only team to score in the second period. 17:13 into the period Jack Tos (Burlington, ON) would capitalize on a power play to cut the deficit to just one. Tos was assisted by Nicolas Paolucci (Toronto, ON) and Tyler Duderstadt (Sewickley, PA).  

- Riv struck first in the third, tying the game up at 2-2. Alfred Rotiroti (Chicago, IL) found the back of the net for the Raiders just 5:57 into the period. However, the Bison would strike again about three minutes later to give them the 3-2 lead. Luke Harvie scored the eventual game-winner after receiving the puck from Conor Leonard and Dylan McMahon. The final goal came by way of an empty net 18:41 into the period by Nathan Carl.

- Luke Newell (Littleton, CO) was tagged with the loss putting him at 3-4-1 on the season after a 24-save performance. Mathias Backstrom improved to 3-2 on the season after saving 20 of the 22 shots that he faced.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Shots: Nichols 28, Rivier 22

-  Penalties: Rivier had 10 minutes on 5 infractions, Nichols had 8 minutes on 4 infractions.

-  Power Plays: Nichols was 2-for-5, Rivier was 1-for-4.

- Rivier men's hockey will end the tournament tomorrow against Lebanon Valley at Warrior Arena at 5:40 PM.
