WESTON, Mass. – The Rivier men's soccer team completed a late-game comeback to take down Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent, Regis (Mass.), on the road by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night at Regis Stadium.
With the win the Raiders improved to 4-3-3 (2-2-2 GNAC), while the Pride fell to 3-6-1 (3-5-0 GNAC).
After a quiet beginning to the match, both teams remained scoreless at the end of the first 45 minutes. The Raiders sent in three shots as the clock wound down but would be denied on all three tries.
The action would pick up in the second half, as Regis took a 1-0 lead just 1:32 in.
The Raiders would ramp up the offensive pressure, logging four shots before first-year Alejandro Quezada slotted one past the keepers' outstretched arms from the top of the box off a cross from senior Jonathan Rudy to bring the score to one apiece with just over 17 minutes remaining.
Sophomore forward Mitcb Ward drew a penalty in the 85th minute after stunning the Regis keeper on a counter attack. Graduate forward Thomas Hennessey then fired the game-winning tally down the heart of the net on the try, giving the Raiders their first road victory of the season.
Rivier outshot the Pride, 12-8, as the Raiders put six shots on goal over 90 minutes of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Logan Clough logged four saves in tonight's contest in his fourth victory of the campaign.
The Raiders travel to Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 5 to take on Norwich in another GNAC road matchup. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m. from Sabine Field.
