NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier men's soccer team shut out Plymouth St. by a final score of 4-0 in the Raiders' home opener on Tuesday evening at Merrill Field. First-year Head Coach Jon Cross etched his first victory as a collegiate head coach while sophomore goalkeeper Logan Clough recorded his first collegiate clean sheet.
The victory also marked the program's first win in its home opener since the 2015 campaign.
The Raiders improved to 1-0-1 while the Panthers fell to 1-2-0.
Reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week Thomas Hennessey broke the scoring open, tapping in a feed to the back post from senior Jonathan Rudy just 13:20 into the opening half.
Under nine minutes later, senior Jose Ochoa separated from his defender outside the box and hammered home a right-footed shot into the top corner to double the Raiders' lead.
Following the halftime break, Rivier continued its offensive surge. In the 68th minute, Rudy finessed a shot off the post and in to extend the lead to 3-0.
With under 10 minutes to play, the Raiders scored their fourth and final goal of the contest as sophomore Christopher Guzman beat the Panthers' diving goalkeeper to register his first collegiate goal.
Clough stood firm in net, recording six saves to complete the shutout.
The Raiders outshot the Panthers, 19-15, in the triumph, with Rivier putting 12 shots on target compared to Plymouth St.'s six attempts on goal.
Rivier has now won its past two meetings against the Panthers, both by way of shutout.
Rivier will look to defend Merrill Field again on Saturday, Sept. 7 as the Raiders welcome VTSU Lyndon to Nashua for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff on Community Appreciation Day.
