Men's Basketball downed by NJCU in TOH Consolation Game

(Staten Island, New York) In a first time matchup between the two schools in Men's Basketball, the Rivier University Raiders were upended by the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights 64-49 in the 12th annual Tournament of Heroes hosted by the College of Staten Island.

The defense of the Raiders did a much better job in limiting the opposition to less than 70 points but offensively could not beat the Gothic Knights.

The Raiders were led by All-Tournament nominee senior Tom Poitras (Bow, NH). Poitras had another solid game as he recorded 18 points and 4 rebounds. Senior Nick Walch (Dedham, MA) was right behind him with 15 points and 9 rebounds on the afternoon while sophomore Kywane Thomas (Hartford, CT) had 10 points in the loss.

Senior Emmanuel Smith (New York, NY), junior Jake Nelson (Nashua, NH) and freshman Kevin Francis (Cromwell, CT) were the only other Raiders who recorded a basket. Each finished the game with just two points apiece.

NJCU was led by Jourdan Roberson who had 14 points and Walik Albright – who was solid along the glass with 9 rebounds and 11 points. Khalid Muhammad was the other Gothic Knight to record double-digits with 10 points.

The loss drops the Raiders' overall record to 4-6. NJCU improved to 6-4.

Next up for Rivier will be Mount Ida College on January 7th. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup will begin at approx. 6pm on the Newton, Mass campus. Two days later the Raiders will host Albertus Magnus College in a 7pm GNAC contest at the Muldoon Gymnasium.
