Men's Basketball falls in Overtime at Suffolk, 91-84

(Boston, Mass.) In their 2013-14 Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener, the Rivier University Men's Basketball team suffered a tough 91-84 overtime loss at Suffolk University this evening.

Rivier senior Tom Poitras (Bow, NH) finished the evening leading all scorers with 29 points – including 15 of them within the first 10 minutes of the contest. Classmate Nick Walch (Dedham, MA) continues his outstanding start to the season as he finished with his fourth straight double-double; 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Jake Nelson (Nashua, NH) was the only other Raider in double figures with 13 points and freshman Kevin Francis (Cromwell, CT) added 9 points off the bench.

This was a tough loss for Rivier as they held a 9 point lead with four minutes remaining in regulation.

Suffolk was led by freshman Frantz Pinard (Arlington, MA) who scored 8 of his 19 points in overtime for the Rams' second consecutive win. He also collected a game high 11 rebounds. Junior Sam Nwadike (Houston, TX) finished the evening with a team-high 20 points, as five Suffolk players registered double digits in scoring totals. Sophomore Adam Chick (Northbrook, IL) was 4-for-6 from the field for 13 points, while classmate Jake Meister (Madison, NJ) and junior Matt Powers (Westwood, MA) also chipped in with 13 points apiece.

Both teams will be back in action later this week hosting GNAC games against Saint Joseph's College (ME). Suffolk will play the Monks first on Thursday evening (7:30pm) before they make the trip to Nashua for a 1pm game on Saturday afternoon.
