Field Hockey Fights Back to Beat Lasell 3-2 in Overtime

NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier field hockey team fought back to take down Lasell, 3-2 in overtime, Saturday afternoon for their Pink Out game in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. With the win, the Raiders improved to 3-7 (2-5 GNAC), while the Lasers dropped to 6-5 (3-3 GNAC).

In the Raiders' first trip to the shooting area, sophomore Brianna Spinelli would fire a shot right past the goalkeeper in just the first three minutes of action to give the Raiders an early 1-0 lead over the Raiders.

Rivier would keep up the offensive pressure heading into the next 15 minutes of play. After putting three shots on goal in the first, the Raiders would tally on another three. Out of the three, senior Madison Bovill would deliver a strike off a cross-crease pass from junior Reilly Swislosky to bring the lead to two.

Lasell would find the fire they were looking for in the first half despite the heavy offensive zone presence from the Raiders. Just over seven minutes into the third quarter, the Laser would find slot one in the back to the net to cut the lead to one.

Lasell would build off the momentum from the third quarter and just under four minutes into the fourth quarter, would notch the game at two apiece. The clock would strike zeros and the Lasers, and this game would be heading to overtime.

The Raiders would find their groove again after a couple of early overtime chances from the Lasers. Sophomore Shaelyn Burke would take the first shot in overtime for Rivier and for the next three minutes, it was all Raiders.

A ball cleared by the Lasers would turn into the game-winning goal as senior Abby Nadeau would play the ball in with an ariel pass to Bovill and she would take care of the rest. Bovill would find twine for the second time on the day, ending the contest, 3-2.

Senior goalkeeper, Kylie Coupal, logged seven saves in the contest.

The Raiders are back in action Tuesday, Oct. 8 to take on cross-state rivals Keene St. in non-conference play. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m. at Merrill Field.
