Women's Basketball crusies to 22 point win over Johnson State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Rivier University won in a convincing fashion over Johnson State University, 74-52, on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the 2013 BSU Tip-Off Classic.

With the win, Rivier improves their overall record to 2-1 while Johnson State falls to 0-3 overall.

The Raiders maintained the lead throughout the entire first half and only let Johnson State come within one early in the game. In the final ten minutes of the stanza, Rivier led the Badgers by 11+ points with their largest lead (37-16) coming in the final two minutes. Johnson State, however, ended the half on a 5-0 run to bring them within 15 (37-21) before the end of the half.

The second half began with a 15-7 run by the Badgers bringing them with 8 (44-36) with 14:45 left in the game. However, Rivier cut Johnson State's run and took control of the rest of the game.

Rivier was led by junior guard Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H.) who posted 14 points and six ebounds and four steals. The Raiders also had help from their freshman forward Savanna Butterfield (Londonberry, N.H.) as she added 13 points and seven rebounds, five of which came off the offensive boards.

Senior guard Ryan Baker (Whitinsville, Mass.) finished with seven assists, six rebounds, five steals and five points for Rivier as she was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Freshman forward Kasey DeGreenia (Concord, Vt.) had a big game coming off the bench for Johnson State as she recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds on her way to All-Tournament honors. Freshman forward Domonique Carter-Stanley (Norwalk, Conn.) also contributed 10 points.

Rivier University shot 41% (30-74) from the floor while holding Johnson State to only 31% (22-70) shooting. The Badgers however outrebound the Raiders 50-48 in the contest.

Both teams return to action Tuesday evening. Rivier will travel to face Daniel Webster at 7:00 pm while Johnson State will host Middlebury at 6:00 pm.
