#7 Raiders open up with a 3-0 win at JWU

Providence, R.I. – #7 Rivier College opened the 2012 campaign with a 3-0 win against Johnson & Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at the Harborside Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.

Rivier posted a 25-21 win in the first game before taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 win in game two. The visiting Raiders wrapped up the victory with a 25-21 win in the third and final set.

Freshman Chris Markuson (Cupertino, Calif.) paced Rivier with 12 kills and five digs while junior Steve Visentin (Cheshire, Conn.) had 28 set assists, six digs and three blocks in the victory for the Raiders. Sophomore Aaron Almario (Alhambra, CA) had a match high 6 blocks and seniors Drew Corwin (Framingham, MA) and Chris Convertito (Trumball, CT) were solid with 3 kills and 4 digs respectively.

Johnson & Wales was led by sophomore Dan Tiner (Salem, N.H.) with eight kills, four digs and two service aces while sophomore Shawn Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) had five kills and three service aces for the Wildcats.

Rivier's (1-0 GNAC; 1-0 overall) next match will be their home opener on Friday 1/27 against Division 1 Harvard University. Game time at The Muldoon is 7:00pm.
