Men's Soccer earns three selections to GNAC All-Conference Teams

(Winthrop, Mass.) The Great Northeast Athletic Conference announced earlier today their 2016 Men's Soccer All-Conference Teams and for the first time since 2014, multiple Rivier University Student-Athletes were selected. The program enjoyed their best season in 2016 as they finished at 8-9-1 overall and a seventh seed in the GNAC Tournament.

Senior Alex Armstrong (Wakefield, R.I.) was tabbed as a GNAC All-Conference 2nd Team midfielder as he had an exceptional year. One of the team's captains, Armstrong scored a team high seven goals and assisted on six others for a total of 20 points. He netted the game winner in the team's 3-2 win at Lasell College back on October 8th. Armstrong also had a two goal game at home against Wheelock College on September 14th.

Joining Armstrong on the GNAC All-Conference 2nd Team is fellow senior Kyle Gambeski (Bedford, N.H.) who was selected as a center back. The leader of the defensive unit, Gambeski – who is also a captain – helped guide the team to limit the shots taken on net. Throughout the season, the Raiders allowed 142 shots on net with only 25 of those finding the twine; good enough for a 1.52 Goals Against Average. The veteran played in 15 games, scoring three goals and adding two assists. He did manage to net the game winner in the team's 2-1 non-conference win at Lesley University on October 2nd.

The third member of the Men's Soccer team to earn All-Conference honors is also another team captain in senior Michael Russo (Lynn, Mass.). Russo was named a GNAC All-Conference 3rd Team forward after scoring six goals in 14 shots on net over sixteen games. He knocked home two game winning goals with a hat trick against Wheelock and the lone goal in the 1-0 GNAC win over Mount Ida College.

This is the first and only time that Armstrong, Gambeski and Russo have been named the All-Conference team as all are set to graduate in May.
