Men's Soccer draws even with Anna Maria, 2-2

(Paxton, Mass.) The Rivier University Men's Soccer team earned a tough 2-2 tie against Anna Maria College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon. With the even draw, the Raiders stand at 3-3-1 overall (0-2-1 GNAC) while Anna Maria moves to 1-5-1 (1-1-1 GNAC).

The first half saw each team take over 10 shots but it was Rivier who was able to get an early 1-0 advantage. Senior Michael Russo (Lynn, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal at the 9:09 mark for his fourth goal of the year. The AMCATS would find the equalizer at 31:43 when Christopher Mattioli collected a loose ball and fired a 25-yard shot into the net.

The second half featured the AMCATS taking the lead in the 69th minute when Riley Kobus sprinted down the left sideline with the ball and passed it to Mattioli, who riffled it past the Raider keeper for a 2-1 lead.

A resilient Raider bunch fought back and tied the game in the 77th minute as senior Alex Armstrong's (Wakefield, R.I.) shot deflected off an AMCAT defender and into the net.

Freshman Collin Deyarmin (Raymond, N.H.) tallied eight saves for Rivier as his counterpart Mark Robinshaw stopped six shots for the AMCATS.

It will be a short turnaround for the Raiders as they travel across town tomorrow afternoon for a 12pm kickoff with Daniel Webster College.
