Men's Soccer shuts out Mount Ida, 1-0

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Men's Soccer team got an early goal from senior Michael Russo (Lynn, Mass.) and freshman goalkeeper Collin Deyarmin (Raymond, N.H.) stopped all six shots he faced as the Raiders earned a tough 1-0 win over visiting Mount Ida College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Raider Field. The win evens the overall record for Rivier at 4-4-1 and also gives them their first GNAC win of the year (1-2-1). Mount Ida falls to 4-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.

Russo netted his fifth goal of the season at 15:11 off a pass from classmate Alex Armstrong (Wakefield, R.I.). Armstrong was able to collect the ball and pass it with his heel to Russo who then banked it off the post and into the back of the net.

Mount Ida had an opportunity to tie it up with five minutes left to play but sophomore Juan Brenes' (Santo Domingo, D.R.) header ricocheted off the far post and out into traffic before being cleared by Rivier.

Other than that one opportunity, Deyarmin was brilliant in net once again as he made six saves for his second career shutout. Mount Ida junior keeper Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) made five saves in the loss.

The Raiders will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Cambridge, Mass. tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference date with Lesley University. Game time is set for 12pm. Mount Ida, meanwhile, won't kickoff again until Wednesday (10/5) evening when they host Suffolk University at 7pm.
