Field Hockey sends off seniors with 3-1 win

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Field Hockey team rewarded the three graduating seniors as they defeated visiting Wells College, 3-1 in front of about 50 fans and family at Raider Field. Senior goalkeeper Makenzie Flagg (Shirley, Mass.) made four saves as she earned her fifth win of the season in her final home game.

The Raiders open the scoring just 1:22 into the contest as sophomore Meredith Garcia (Newton, N.H.) connected on a pass from classmate Chelsea Gomes (Epsom, N.H.) to give Rivier a 1-0 lead. Wells College would answer that with a goal from Courtney Bastian inside the 11 minute mark but that would be all that Flagg would allow.

Gomes would then give Rivier the lead for good as she was able to capitalize with less than two minutes left in the first half for her team leading sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Brittani Garza (Alexandria, Va.) assisted on the go-ahead goal.

Junior Amber Bennett (New Boston, N.H.) added an insurance goal as she belted a shot off a penalty corner to give the Raiders a two goal lead and the final score of 3-1. Sophomore Nicole Hauer (North Attleboro, Mass.) was credited with the assist.

This was also the final home game in the careers for senior defensemen Victoria Jones (West Chesterfield, N.H.) and Christa Murphy (Dracut, Mass.). Both have been integral parts of the defense this season.

The Raiders are now 5-10 overall on the season. They will wrap-up the regular season with two road games, Saturday 10/18 @ Simmons College and 10/22 @ New England College, before potentially making their first trip to the postseason. Wells College will host Marywood on Tuesday afternoon in their next scheduled matchup.
