Field Hockey falls to Westfield State in Season Opener

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Field Hockey team opened the 2014 season with an 8-1 non-conference loss to visiting Westfield State University up at Raider Field. Westfield State improves to 1-0 and the Raiders fall to 0-1.

Senior Makenzie Flagg (Shirley, Mass.) made 12 saves on 20 shots faced and sophomore Nicole Hauer (North Attleboro, Mass.) recorded her first goal of the season in the loss, classmate Meredith Garcia (Newton, N.H.) recorded her first assist.

For Westfield State, Holly Brouillette registered a hat trick as she netted three goals and Rachel Bunce added two goals in the win. Both Kelly Kenney and Meg Doherty had two assists each. Goaltender Megan Fountaine stopped both shots she faced on the evening and Danielle Whitman allowed the lone Raider tally late in the game.

Rivier will travel to Western Connecticut State University for their next scheduled contest on Saturday morning, an 11am start time. Westfield State will also be in action on Saturday as they host Western New England at 1pm.
