Mederos Throws Complete-Game Shutout as Baseball Downs Wells, 8-0

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore right-hander Nolan Mederos recorded a complete-game shutout as he fanned eight Wells batters over nine scoreless innings in an 8-0 victory for Rivier baseball over Wells on Saturday night at Polo Grounds as part of The Ripken Experience.

Mederos secured the first nine-inning shutout for Rivier since the Raiders downed Newbury, 4-0, on April 10, 2014 at Holman Stadium.

The victory capped off the Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach for the Raiders and improved their overall record to 3-4. The Express evened out to 4-4 with the loss.

Rivier used a sacrifice fly off the bat of JD Normand to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after Kyle Hsu recorded his first triple of the outing.

A bunt by Owen Medlock caused havoc in the next inning as the Express' third baseman threw the ball into the outfield, allowing Ben O'Connell to score from second and push Alex Gallicano to third. Two batters later, Hsu sent Gallicano across the plate on a sacrifice fly to extend the Raiders' lead to three runs.

In the fifth, a Wells error allowed Frank Gulezian to reach home and make it 4-0 after he walked to get on base.

Luis Tejada got in on the action in the sixth as he doubled to right to easily score Hsu who had tripled for the second time just prior.

After the Raiders failed to extend their lead in the top of the seventh, Mederos got three consecutive Wells batters to ground out to move to the eighth unblemished.

Again, in the bottom of the eighth, Mederos put away all three batters on a ground out, fly out, and strikeout looking.

Riv's offense provided three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to extend its lead to 8-0.

Mederos took the hill for the ninth, and after the leadoff batter reached on an error, he made quick work of the next three he faced, recording a strikeout and two flyouts to cap off his historic performance.

Hsu, Tejada, Normand, O'Connell, and Luis Colon each recorded an RBI in the victory with Hsu reaching safely four times and scoring twice. Gulezian crossed the plate twice after walking on two occasions and singling.

The Raiders head back to New England to prepare for a non-conference showdown against Wentworth on Wednesday, March 13 at 5:00 p.m. at Libby Field.
