Roth nets OT winner, Field Hockey tops Elms 2-1

(Chicopee, Mass.) The Rivier University Field Hockey team had to use eight extra minutes as they were triumphant against Elms College in a non-conference contest held at Leary Field on Monday night. The Raiders are now 4-13 overall on the season while Elms stumbles to 4-14.

In the 55th minute of play, Raiders sophomore Chelsie Hubicsak-Muldowney (Windham, N.H.) had a chance to break the scoreless tie on a corner, but her blast from the point rang off the right post. Less than a minute later, Rivier broke through as sophomore Jordan Parece (Pelham, N.H.) put back a rebound on a deflected shot from Muldowney to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

With 11:30 to play, the Blazers found the equalizer as freshman Hayley Omahen (El Cajon, Calif.) hammered a ball that popped towards the net and landed in front of Rivier freshman goalkeeper Stevie Charest (Lisbon, Maine), where freshman Madison Messier (Warren, Mass.) swooped in and tucked a shot past Charest, evening the score at 1-1. Regulation play ended with the score tied.

After eight minutes of overtime action, the Raiders netted the game-winner as freshman Linsey Roth (Tyngsboro, Mass.) gathered a loose ball following a penalty corner, and placed a shot past Elms senior goalie Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.), to give Rivier the 2-1 victory.

Rivier outshot the Blazers, 21-9, during the contest. Alvino made a game-high 10 saves, while Charest stopped three shots in the win.

Rivier will close out the 2015 season on Wednesday evening as they host Regis College at 7pm. Elms will travel to Wheelock College for a New England Collegiate Conference match on Wednesday night as well.
