Field Hockey falls at home to Western Connecticut State, 2-1

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Field Hockey team dropped a hard fought non-conference contest this evening to visiting Western Connecticut State University, 2-1 under the lights at Raider Field. The Raiders slide to 3-12 overall on the year while Western Connecticut State improves to 7-9.

WCSU got on the board first as sophomore Erika Wixted (New Fairfield, Conn.) fired a shot into the back of the net on a pass from senior Jenny Cappello (Litchfield, Conn.) inside of the 11th minute.

Sophomore Greata McConnell (Norwalk, Conn.) would make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors when she knocked home a pass from senior Kristy Matasavage (Middlebury, Conn.) at 44:11.

With time winding down, the Raiders were able to break up the shutout at 68:36. Sophomore Marykate Sweeney (Chicopee, Mass.) scored her team leading fifth goal of the season with a helper credited to classmate Jordan Parece (Pelham, N.H.).

Raider freshman goaltender Emily Foster (West Lebanon, N.H.) made 17 saves on the evening with her counterpart, WCSU junior Kristy Trotta (Danbury, Conn.) stopping one of the two shots she faced in the contest.

Rivier will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon as they host Lasell College in a 1pm game at Raider Field. Western Connecticut State will also be in action on Saturday as they travel to Framingham State for a Little East Conference contest in Framingham, Mass.
