Baseball Sweeps Dean

NASHUA, NH: Rivier baseball swept Dean College this afternoon in conference action to clinch a playoff berth for the first time since 2016.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/25/23

- Score: Rivier 3, Dean 2. Rivier 5, Dean 4

- Records: Rivier (11-22, 8-8 GNAC), Dean (8-26, 5-11 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One

-  In the low-scoring affair, the Bulldogs got on the board first in the opening frame. Brayden McLaughlin got the ball rolling with a single to center field to bring in the lone run of the inning. The Raiders would knot it up a one on a Zach White (Long Beach, CA) RBI double to left field to end the first inning.  

Dylan Aliberti (Sandown, NH) would put Rivier up one in the very next inning on an RBI single to left field. Dean would tie the game up at two in the top of the fifth on a bases-loaded single to left field by Cam Watkins. Two innings later, the Raiders would walk it off on an errant throw on a pickoff move by the Bulldogs pitcher. The final run got into place with an inning opening triple by Owen Medlock (Merrimack, NH) to right field.  

- Anthony Morro (Durham, CT) picked up the win (1-5) after pitching a complete game with just eight hits, allowing two earned runs and five strikeouts. Mason Neumann would be tagged with the loss (2-4) after going 6.1 innings, eight hits allowed, three earned runs, and six strikeouts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Top Performers

-  Medlock was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and a triple.

Frank Gulezian (Derry, NH) was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3.

-  McLaughlin was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two

-  The Bulldogs went up 2-0 in the first three innings before the Raiders would respond. Deans first two runs would come on wild pitches by the Riv pitching staff. Rivier would get one back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a White double down the right field line. Jacob Boudreau (Auburn, NH) would then step up in the bottom of the fifth to bring in the tying run on a sacrifice fly to left field.

- The Raiders would then take a three-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runs coming in on another hit by Aliberti, this time it being a double down the left field line. The third run would score on a throwing error by the Bulldogs shortstop. Dean would cut the lead to just one at 4-5 in the top of the 8th inning when Watkins tried to stretch a single into a double and was thrown out by Medlock in right field. He did bring in two runs on a single before being cut down.  

- Nate Bonacorsi (Goffstown, NH) got the win (3-0) after throwing in seven innings with just five hits allowed with, two earned runs and five strikeouts. Ty Baker (Hudson, NH) would come in to close it out for his second save of the year with zeros across the board. Hunter Espinosa would get the loss (2-3) after coming in, in relief, going 2.1 innings with four hits allowed, two earned runs, and four strikeouts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Top Performers

-  Aliberti was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored, and a double.

-  White was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double.

-  Watkins was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
