Baseball Splits with Lesley

WATERTOWN, MA: Rivier baseball split with Lesly University this afternoon in non-conference play on Victory Field.  

THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/18/23

- Score: Lesly 12, Rivier 3. Rivier 11, Lesley 4

- Records: Rivier (3-7), Lesley (3-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One

-  The Raiders struggled to push runs across after taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Lynx would tie it 1-1 in the bottom of the third before going off for six in the fourth inning, followed by another five in the fifth inning. Lesley used all 14 of their hits to produce their runs, as they were only walked five times.

- Rivier did tack on another two runs throughout the contest, with one coming in the fourth inning and the third and final run in the top of the sixth. Jacob Plamondon (Manchester, NH) batted in the second run of the game for the Raiders on an RBI single to center field. Their final run came on a solo shot by Patrick Young (Billerica, MA) to right field.

- On the mound in this one was Nolan Mederos (Nashua, NH), who was tagged with the loss (0-3) after going 3.1 innings with five hits, five earned, and five strikeouts. Getting the win today was Dylan Langston his first of the season, making him 1-0. Langston pitched six innings, giving up just five hits, three earned, and compiled 11 strikeouts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Top Performers

-  Young was 1-for-3 with an RBI on his home run

-  Ian Dempsey was 4-for-5 with a double, 3 RBIs, and 3 runs scored.

-  Jake Samela was 1-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two

-  Game two saw the roles reversed as the Raiders would rack up the hits with two big innings. Rivier would take the lead in the top of the third with a three-run effort. Frank Gulezian (Derry, NH) would start the scoring in the third with a double to left center, plating one. Then, John Canto (Harwich, MA) would stay hot at the plate, hitting a two-run shot to give Riv a 4-1 lead.

-  The Raiders would go off again in the top of the sixth with seven runs. The fourth two to reach were via a walk and a catcher's interference. They would both steal and then come around to score on wild pitches. Young would then bat in another with a double to left field. Zach White (Long Beach, CA) would bat in Young on a sing to right field. Canto would follow that with another extra-base hit, doubling to center field to plate one. Matt Labrecque (Manchester, NH) was in the DH spot today and made the most of the opportunity with a two-RBI single to right field to end the seven-run sixth.

- Wesly Martinez (Methuen, MA) got the win on the mound for the Raiders. He pitched five innings in which he gave up just five hits and two runs. The loss was given to Evan Swift, his first of the year to drop to 0-1. He went 2.1 innings, giving up six hits and four earned runs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Top Performers

-  Canto was 2-for-4 with a home run, double, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored.

-  Young was 3-for-5 with an RBI, 2 doubles, and 2 runs scored.

-  Adam Budorick was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
