Baseball Splits with Norwich

NORTHFIELD, VT: Rivier baseball split this afternoon's doubleheader against Norwich University in conference action.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/22/23

- Score: Rivier 8, Norwich 5. Norwich 9, Rivier 3

- Records: Rivier (9-22, 6-8 GNAC), Norwich (9-20, 3-10 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One

-  After scoring on a ground out and taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Raiders would go on to give up three runs through the first two innings. Geffen Franus would plate the first in the opening inning on a single to center field. Zeb Perreault would tack on the second run in the second inning on a solo shot to right field. PJ Morales would add the third a few batters later on a sacrifice fly to center field.  

- The Raiders would close the gap and take the lead in the top of the fourth, starting with a two-run double by John Canto (Harwich, MA). After an error by the Norwich defense allowing another to come across, Dylan Aliberti (Sandown, NH) would then clear the bases on a single and an error by the left fielder to give Riv a 6-3 lead.

- The Cadets would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but that would be all. Tyler Callahan would plate the first on a double to left center field. He was followed up by a Jakob Hayes double to get their fifth and final run of the game.

- Owen Medlock (Merrimack, NH) would then single to right field to bring in two more Raider runs to get the final of 8-5.

- Sam Kalivas (Methuen, MA) would get the win (2-1) after pitching in two innings, allowing just one hit with one strikeout. Ty Baker (Hudson, NH) would get the save after going 1.1 innings with no hits or runs allowed. After allowing seven hits, four earned runs, and three strikeouts, Ryan Miller would get the loss (3-4) for the Cadets.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Top Performers

-  Aliberti was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a run scored.

-  Canto was 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

-  Callahan was 2-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two

-  After being tied 1-1 going into the top of the sixth, Frank Gulezian (Derry, NH) would pick up his second RBI of the game on a solo home run to left center field. The Cadets would go on to surpass the Raiders in the bottom half of the frame on a three-run inning. Ryland Richardson would get it started with a single to left field, bringing in one. Callahan would bring in the rest on a two-RBI single to center field.

- Norwich would add to their lead in the seventh with another four runs coming across to score. Franus would get another double to start it up, scoring one. Brock Carpenter would follow him with an RBI single to left center. Richardson would plate another two on a triple to left center field. The Raiders would plate their last run in the top of the eighth on a solo shot by Zachary White (Long Beach, CA) to left field.

- Matt Ingraffia would get the win (1-4) after going seven innings with six hits, two earned runs, and 13 strikeouts. Wesly Martinez (Methuen, MA) would get tagged with the loss (1-6) after going 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, and two strikeouts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Top Performers

-  Richardson was 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs with a double and triple.

-  Callahan was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a double.

-  Gulezian was 2-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBIs.
