Baseball Takes One Over Monks in Weekend Split

NASHUA, NH: Rivier baseball split this afternoon with the Monks of Saint Joseph's College in GNAC action.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/16/23

- Score: SJC 8, Rivier 0. Rivier 7, SJC 4

- Records: Rivier (8-20, 5-7 GNA), SJC (13-17, 7-5 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One

-  It was all Monks in this one. They managed to score in three innings throughout the seven-inning game. They would plate three in the top of the second on three RBI hits. That inning was highlighted by a Terry Morrissey double to left center field that brought in the first run.

- St. Joe's would bring in three more in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh. Zach Miles would bring in two of the three on a single to right field. Morrissey would plate another in the seventh on a single to right field.  

- Jason Johnson would get the win (2-2) after pitching in 5 innings, allowing just three hits and no earned with nine strikeouts. Nolan Mederos (Nashua, NH) would get the loss (1-4) after going 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits, four earned runs, and two strikeouts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Top Performers

-  Jared Wilhelm was a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

-  Morrissey was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs.

-  Miles finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two

-  Game two saw the Raiders respond to everything the Monks threw at them. Both teams put up two runs each in the third. The Monks would strike first in the inning on a throwing error that pated one. Luke Stephens would then step up and hit a single to center field, pushing across the second. Rivier responded with a two-run inning of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Frank Gulezian (Derry, NH) would get it started with a double to right center field, plating one. Zachary White (Long Beach, CA) would then send him home on a single to left field.

-  The Monks would retake the lead in the eighth inning on a fielding blunder in the infield that would allow two to score, giving them a 4-2 lead. The Raiders would again respond in the bottom of the inning, but this time would go off to score five, giving them their first lead of the day.

- The bottom of the eighth started with another Gulezian RBI hit, this time a double to right center. White would again deliver as well, ripping a ball into left field, plating Gulezian. Riv worked the bases loaded with a hit by a pitch and a walk, which then lead to an RBI walk for Owen Medlock (Merrimack, NH). The final two runs would come across with one swing of the bat from Jacob Boudreau (Auburn, NH) with a single up the middle.

- Brendan Ferris (Methuen, MA) would get the win with 1.1 perfect innings pitched. Matt Thibault would come in and get the loss (0-1) after pitching just one-third of an inning, walking two and allowing two runs to score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Top Performers

-  Gulezian was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs.

- White was also 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

-  Boudreau had 3 hits in 4 at bats with 2 RBIs.
