Field Hockey Downs USJ, 5-2, For Fifth Straight GNAC Victory

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Rivier field hockey team got back into the win column with a 5-2 triumph over Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday afternoon at the USJ Athletic Complex, as five different goal scorers contributed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win. The Raiders now sit at 6-7 (6-3 GNAC), marking the third season in a row that the program has earned at least six GNAC wins, while the Blue Jays fell to 3-10 (3-6 GNAC).

Rivier's Madison Bovill scored the contest's first goal 6:43 into the contest to put the visitors up. In the waning seconds of the opening quarter, USJ's Maya Tomko would equalize the score at 1-1.

Hailey Morse scored the lone goal of the second quarter to regain the Raiders' one-goal edge heading into the halftime break.

6:28 into the third quarter, Morse would find Sydney Spenard for Rivier's third goal, increasing the lead to two.

In the fourth, Chloe Sicard scored with help from Madison Streeter before Streeter buried her own unassisted shot to put Rivier up 5-1. In the final two minutes of regulation, Tomko would tally her second goal of the day, but the comeback effort would fall short for Saint Joseph.

Despite the Blue Jays outshooting the Raiders, 14-12, in the contest, Rivier put 10 shots on goal to USJ's seven. Rivier goalkeeper Kylie Coupal stood tall in net, making five saves in her sixth victory of the season. Riv accumulated six corner chances to the Blue Jays' two.

The Raiders will return to the friendly confines of Merrill Field on Wednesday, Oct. 18 in a GNAC matchup against Elms set to start at 5:00 p.m.
