Field Hockey Soars Past the Falcons, 6-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. The Rivier field hockey team shut out Albertus Magnus 6-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on the road at Celentano Field on Saturday afternoon to extend its winning streak to three games.

It was a scoreless first quarter, but about a minute into the second, Kayla Miles fired in a Rivier goal to get the scoring started, the assist was from Chloe Sicard.

Three Raiders goals were added in the third quarter, beginning with Sydney Spenard's ability to settle the ball inside the circle initiated by a penalty corner, sending in an unassisted goal with 7:49 to play in the half. Just over 30 seconds later, Miles found Sicard who tapped in another Riv goal, increasing the lead to three. Miles followed that up by scoring her second goal of the game with less than four minutes left in the half, with an assist credited to Spenard.

The Raiders secured two more goals in the fourth quarter to expand their lead to 6-0. Spenard scored her second goal of the game, with an assist from Madison Streeter at just 3:16 into the fourth and then with just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Spenard shoved in the final goal, with an assist credited to Madison Bovill, securing the hat trick.

With Spenard's hat trick and one assist this afternoon, the senior recorded seven points. Miles is currently the leading offensive threat with 17 points, with Spenard right behind her with 16.

The Raiders outshot the Falcons 34-6, allowing no shots in the entire third quarter. Riv obtained 13 penalty corners to Albertus Magnus' eight.

Kylie Coupal of the Raiders was tagged with the shutout win, making five saves in net.

First-year head coach Hayley Sutherland helped her team pick up the second shutout of the season and fourth GNAC win, with the team now above .500 in conference play.

The Raiders continue their road stand on Tuesday, Oct. 10, traveling to Colby-Sawyer to play a GNAC match with a start time of 4:00 p.m. from Veitch Field.
