PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 7 Rivier women's volleyball team fell to No. 2 JWU (Providence) in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at the Wildcat Center.
The Raiders concluded their season 16-16 overall. The Wildcats improved to 20-11, advancing to the semifinal round.
Rivier used a three-point swing in the middle of the first set with a pair of aces from sophomore Sam Driend in that span to cut the Raiders deficit to one point, 17-16. JWU went on a five-point run in response to take a 22-16 lead and coast to a 1-0 lead.
The Raiders kept it close in the early parts of the second set, finding themselves trailing 11-10. Two kills and three Rivier errors helped the Wildcats' lead balloon to six before a service error gave Riv a chance to cut the deficit to three. A Bailey Koopman kill would spark an 8-0 run to put the hosts in control, 24-13, en route to taking a 2-0 match lead.
The Wildcats produced a .545 team hitting percentage in the third set to down the Raiders, 25-7, and secure the sweep.
In the final matches of their careers, Lily Sills led the Raiders with six kills at a .150 clip, Ryan Hicks posted 10 assists and Brynn Roche registered four block assists. Sophomore libero Hannah Raab notched 10 digs.
