Women’s Volleyball Defeated by UMass Boston
BOSTON, Mass. – The Rivier women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to UMass Boston on Wednesday night in a non-conference clash at the Clark Athletic Center.
The Raiders fell to 11-14 while the Beacons improved to 14-8.
The first set featured six ties, the last of which came at 12-12 when Lauren Westlund rattled off her second-straight kill giving the Beacons the lead for the rest of the set en route to a 25-18 win. Senior setter Ryan Hicks produced seven assists and five digs in the opening game.
After trailing 15-8, Rivier used a service run by sophomore outside Sam Driend to cut the deficit to two. After leading by a score of 16-14, UMass Boston's cushion grew as the home team finished on a 9-3 run to secure a 2-0 match lead.
The Beacons led from the jump in the third, forcing Riv to call a timeout trailing 9-4. UMass Boston's lead grew as large as 14 in the third to help close the match with a final set score of 25-11. The Beacons produced a .382 team hitting percentage and limited the Raiders' to a .059 attack percentage in the frame.
Hicks finished with 21 helpers and 11 digs. Senior middle Brynn Roche hit at a .214 clip, registering four kills.
The Raiders will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, Nov. 2 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match hosted by Elms. The Raiders will take on Anna Maria at 1:00 p.m. before playing the host Blazers at 3:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena.
