Women's Basketball takes down Simmons, 76-54

(Boston, Mass.) The Rivier University Women's Basketball team defeated Simmons College 76-54 in a GNAC matchup this afternoon at the Moore Gymnasium in Boston, Mass. With the win, Rivier improves to 7-8 (3-1 GNAC). With the loss, Simmons College drops to 4-12 (0-3 GNAC).

The Raiders simply took the game to the Sharks in this one, defeating them by an impressive 22 points. Rivier, who scored 40 points in the first half, pushed the pace the entire game, forcing the Sharks to try and keep up with them, which ultimately, led to their downfall. The Raiders were led by senior guard Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H.) who was able to lead all scorers with 25 points. Purcell was also able to tally 4 assists and 3 steals. Sophomore Savanna Butterfield (Londonderry, N.H.) also played very well for the Raiders, adding an impressive 13 points to Rivier's efforts.

Sophomore Chelsey Hussey (Lebanon, Conn.) led the Raiders with 12 rebounds while also acoring 4 points and tallying 4 assists. Sophomore Caitlyn Perry (Nashua, N.H.) also added 18 points for Rivier.

The second half was more of the same for the Raiders, as they were able to outscore the Sharks 36-23 in an electric second half of basketball. Rivier shot 54.5% (30-55) from the floor, including 58.3% (14-24) in the second half, while holding Simmons to just 23.5% (8-34). The night was not all bad for the Sharks, as they had some great performances turned in from their players.

Jennifer Janiak (Chelmsford, Mass.) was able to scored 10 points while also grabbing 4 rebounds on the night. Jamie Zoldy (Watertown, Conn.) was able to score 11 points for the Sharks, while Kimberlee Hixon (Taunton, Mass.) was able to give Simmons a spark off of the bench with 7 points.

Senior Deanna Purcell, will head into Thursday evening's matchup with Pine Manor College only 23 points shy of breaking the 2,000 point barrier. Purcell will look to eclipse the 2,000 point mark at home, come show your support.

For the next contest, the Rivier Women's Basketball team will host Pine Manor, Thursday January 29th, at 7:00pm in a non-conference showdown. As for the Simmons College Sharks, their next contest takes them on the road to play Emerson College in a non-conference matchup, Thursday January 29th, at 7:00pm.
