Women's Volleyball tops Wellesley and WPI

(Worcester, Mass.) The Rivier University Women's Volleyball team returned to their winning ways as they defeated both Wellesley (3-0) and host WPI (3-0) in a non-conference tri-match hosted by the Engineers.

The Raiders improve to 13-1 on the season with the two wins. WPI falls to 10-3 while Wellesley slides to 9-6.

Rivier 3, Wellesley 0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-12)

The senior middle hitter tandem of Dana Mott (Medway, MA) and Lauren Silverman (Chelmsford, MA) led the Raiders to a 3-0 sweep of the Blue in the second match of the day. The duo combined to hit .385 with 20 kills and two block assists.

Wellesley sophomore setter Michelle Li (Scarsdale, NY) was nearly perfect from the floor, recording five kills on six attempts for an .833 attack percentage. Reece once again led the offense with eight kills while Ulfig and first year Megan Shoop (Cypress, CA) followed up with seven and six kills, respectively.

Rivier 3, WPI 0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-18)

In the final match of the afternoon, Rivier opened up taking the first set, 25-13. Trailing by seven late in the second set, they turned the game around utilizing an 8-1 run to take a two-set lead as they went on to claim the match in three sets.

The Raiders were led by a balanced offensive attack, hitting .333 as a team in the match. Silverman led the way with five kills on seven attempts while senior outside hitter Chelsey Hussey (Lebanon, CT) followed up with four kills.

Sophomore setter Hayley Macken (Clifton Park, NY) paced the offense with 39 assists while recording a .500 attack percentage.

Senior outside hitter Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) led the WPI offense in the second match of the day, posting a .400 attack percentage, tallying four kills on 10 attempts. On the defensive side, she went up with teammate, first year middle hitter Sandra Duarte (Valencia, CA) for a block in the third set. Hunt followed up with three kills on seven attempt and one miscue to hit .286 in the match.

All three teams will be back in action Tuesday September 27th at 7:00 p.m. The Engineers break from conference play when they travel to Newbury while Rivier visits non-conference Keene State and Wellesley hosts Mount Holyoke.
