Women’s Volleyball Downs Saint Joseph’s (Me.) on ALS Awareness Day

NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier women's volleyball team battled to a four-set win over Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Saint Joseph's (Me.) on ALS Awareness Day on Saturday. Playing for the first time on the newly transformed Muldoon Gymnasium court, the Raiders (9-5, 5-2 GNAC) were victorious by set scores of 25-22, 14-25, 25-21, 25-18 to move to 16-0 in the all-time series against the Monk (6-11, 3-4 GNAC).

Late in the set, Saint Joseph's would rally to take the lead, but Callie Nanos would put Rivier up for good on a kill making it 23-22, helping the home team take a 1-0 lead. Nanos started off strong in the first set, hammering home three kills on nine errorless swings to hit at a .333 clip.

The visitors would go on to record nine kills, five aces, and three solo blocks in the second set to cruise to a 25-14 win. The Monks' defense limited the Raiders to a -.071 team hitting percentage while leveling the score at 1-1.

The middle duo of Lily Sills and Brynn Roche would take over in the third set, as the pair teamed up to record seven kills with no errors to help the team to a .294 hitting percentage in the frame. Sills had five kills at a .625 clip while Roche recorded two kills, hitting .400. The Raiders would also record five aces to the Monks' one in the set. Sam Driend recorded back-to-back aces to give Rivier a 16-13 lead as part of a five-point swing, generating enough distance from Saint Joseph's to win set three.

In the fourth set, Sills would prove to be unstoppable for the Monks' defense, as she notched six kills on eight errorless attacks to hit .750. Behind her in the offensive tallies was Nanos, whose five kills at a .375 clip came up big for the Raiders in closing out the match, 3-1 to get back in the winning column.

Ryan Hicks dished out 24 assists and had 10 digs in the victory. Sofia Pawlusik and Hannah Raab each recorded nine digs while Kaitlyn Miller recorded 10 assists. Roche led all Raiders with two solo blocks, followed by Nanos' one.

Rivier will return to action on home court on Tuesday, Oct. 10 in a non-conference clash against Plymouth St., with first serve set for 7:00 p.m. from Muldoon Gymnasium.
