Men's Lacrosse drops season opener in epic 5th Overtime

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Men's Lacrosse team opened their 2016 season this afternoon with an epic 12-11, Five Overtime loss against the University of Massachusetts – Boston in front of about 100 people at Raider Field. The game lasted roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes before UMass-Boston senior Calvin Lee (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored the game winner with 1:26 left to play in overtime number five.

The game was an instant classic to begin the season as the Beacons scored a pair of unanswered goals within the final 3.5 minutes to force the overtime periods.

Freshman Colby Larsen (Windham, N.H.) was the leading goal scorer for the Raiders as he recorded the first hat trick of his collegiate career. Sophomores Joe Kelland (Watertown, Mass.) and Tyler Tambouris (Hooksett, N.H.) each added two goals as did seniors Cody Lynch (Salem, N.H.) and Kyle Graham (Londonderry, N.H.). Senior goalkeeper Clark Plummer (Londonderry, N.H.) made 18 saves on the afternoon for Rivier.

UMass-Boston was led by sophomore Matthew Duggan's (Weymouth, Mass.) four tallies and Lee finished with three goals and three assists. Sophomore Connor Smith (Kingston, Mass.) added a pair of goal and an assist for three points in the contest. Senior goalkeeper Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.) earned the win in net with 10 saves.

Next for the Raiders will be a March 2nd contest at Nichols College in Dudley, Mass. The Beacons will be on March 1st at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
