Women's Soccer drops GNAC contest at Saint Joseph (Conn.)

(West Hartford, Conn.) The Rivier University Women's Soccer team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game this afternoon at the University of Saint Joseph, 3-0. The loss sends the Raiders' overall record to 1-4-2 with a 0-3 conference mark while the Blue Jays improve to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the GNAC.

USJ sophomore Morgan Skoly (Vernon, Conn.) scored twice in the opening 45 minutes to provide the offense necessary for the win. Junior Nicole Aquillo (Hebron, Conn.) knocked home the other tally of the contest to account for all of the scoring.

The Raiders had an opportunity to tie the match at 1-1 in the 9th minute when junior Emily Edwards (Merrimack, N.H.) gathered a loose ball just outside the box and fired a shot that sailed just barely over the crossbar.

Trailing 3-0 at the half, the Raiders opened the second stanza with a flurry of activity. Rivier was able to get one shot and five corner kicks within the opening seven minutes but the USJ defense held strong to complete the shutout.

Rivier junior goalkeeper Lauren Goodspeed (Merrimack, N.H.) made three saves on the afternoon. USJ freshman goalkeeper Megan Ricci (Center Moriches, N.Y.) earned her third shutout of her career in the victory as she stopped all three shots on net. Goodspeed also made three stops for the Raiders in the setback.

The Raiders will look to return to the win column on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Paxton, Mass. for a 5pm date with Anna Maria College. USJ will also be on the road Wednesday evening as they travel to Norwich University for a 7pm GNAC showdown.
