Men's Volleyball notches first GNAC win of the season, 3-0 over Emmanuel

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier Men's Volleyball team defeated the visiting Emmanuel College Saints 3-0 this evening at the Muldoon Gymnasium. With the win, the Raiders improve their record to 4-4 (1-0 GNAC). With the loss, Emmanuel drops to 1-3 (0-2 GNAC).

The first set in this match was very competitive. Seemingly even in all facets, the Raiders and Saints went down to the wire in this one. At first, the Raiders defense is what gave them the early advantage. The Raiders were able to block the first three offensive attempts for the Saints to give them the early lead. From there, the teams would trade point for point. Tied at 24, both the Raiders and Saints needed a big play in order to take the win. With an excellent kill by Chris Markuson (Cupertino, Calif.) followed by a huge block by the Raiders up front, the Raiders were able to edge the Saints 26-24 to capture the first set victory.

The second set was very much identical to the first. Neither team, regardless of the many attempts put forth, could seem to pull away from the other. Trading points for virtually the entire set, the Raiders with a surge of energy, went on a 4-0 run to take and push their lead to 17-13. Finally, for the first time in this match, a team was able to gain some leverage on the other. The Raiders continued their high level of energy and play for the remainder of the set, eventually winning 25-21.

Heading into the third set up 2-0, the Raiders had all of the confidence and momentum. The Saints needed some rather impressive play in order to keep them in this one. The score constantly remained close, but the Saints couldn't manage to capitalize on a lot of key opportunities. The Raiders however, capitalized on theirs, especially in the third set, jumping to a quick 8-4 lead. This would be the end of Emmanuel's night as Rivier would never relinquish their lead winning the final set 25-23.

In their next contest, the Rivier Men's Volleyball team will travel to play Springfield College in the Morgan Classic. The game is scheduled to begin on Friday, February 20th at 7:30pm. As for the Saints of Emmanuel College, they will play host to Regis College in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, February 21st at 4:00pm.
