Field Hockey defeats JWU, 1-0

(Nashua, N.H.) Junior Marykate Sweeney (Chicopee, Mass.) tipped home a shot from senior Chelsie Hubisack-Muldowney (Windham, N.H.) as the Rivier University Field Hockey team stole a 1-0 win from Johnson and Wales University this evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at a rainy Raider Field. With the victory, the Raiders are now 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the GNAC. The Wildcats fall to 3-7 and 2-1 GNAC.

Prior to the start of the game, the Raiders honored their three outgoing seniors – Brittani Garza (Alexandria, Va.), Chelsea Gomes (Epsom, N.H.) and Hubisack-Muldowney. All three were instrumental pieces to the growing field hockey program and they will be missed moving forward.

Sweeney's third goal of the season occurred in the 25th minute of the contest. Down in Wildcat territory, the Raiders were awarded a penalty corner in which they converted. Hubisack-Muldowney collected the incoming pass from the corner and rifled a shot towards the net. Sweeney, who happened to be in the right place at the right time, was able to tip the shot past the JWU goalie into the back of the net.

Sophomore Emily Foster (West Lebanon, N.H.) was solid between the pipes as she stopped all six shots on net. JWU's Claire Nolan was successful on four of five shots she faced.

The Raiders will return to Raider Field on Tuesday evening as they host Castleton University in a non-conference clash beginning at 6pm. Johnson & Wales will return to the Granite State for their next contest as well on Tuesday evening with a trip to Keene State (6:30pm).
