Keefe pitches Baseball to first victory of the season

(Nashua, New Hampshire) The Rivier University Baseball team finally played a home game inside of Historic Holman Stadium and the results were positive. Sophomore Matthew Keefe (Bradford, Mass.) tossed eight shutout innings as he led the Raiders to a 4-0 victory over visiting Newbury College in a Non-Conference contest on Thursday evening. The win was Rivier's first of the season and snaps a 19 game losing streak to begin the year (1-19 overall) while Newbury falls to 8-12 overall.

Keefe earned his first collegiate victory as he allowed just three hits over his 8 innings of work and struck out three. Junior Alex Mears (Salem, NH) came in and was able to preserve the shutout after facing six hitters in the ninth.

Freshman Drew Neely (Lakeland, FL) got the party started as he hit his first collegiate Home Run, a two-run shot to left in the 2nd inning. The Raiders would plate single runs in the fourth and fifth courtesy of RBI singles from sophomore Taylor Black (West Springfield, Mass.) and freshman George Gouthier (Haverhill, Mass.).

Sophomore David Feole (Scituate, RI) had a career day at the dish as he went 3-for-3 with a double and run scored. Sophomore Alan Nahigian (Saugus, Mass.) recorded the only other hit for Rivier.

Newbury's Travis Wade (Portland, Maine) took the loss on the hill as he gave up three runs on five hits in four innings. Ryan Sinclair allowed a run in three innings of work and Brandon Schlette (Kinnelon, NJ) tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for the Nighthawks. Michael Dwyer (Hamden, Conn.) went 2-for-4 and Cameron D'Agostino (Salisbury, Mass.) registered the other hit (1-for-4) in the loss.

Rivier will return to action this weekend as they host Lasell College and Norwich University in a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference Double-Headers on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Newbury will be back at it on Saturday as well as they travel to Elms College in a New England Collegiate Conference Double-Header
