Baseball gets doubled up by Anna Maria, 9-0 & 5-0

(Nashua, New Hampshire) The Rivier University Baseball team fell twice today to visiting Anna Maria College, 9-0 and 5-0 in a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference contests at Elliot Field on the Bishop Guertin High School campus. The loss drops the overall record for Rivier to 0-18 and 0-6 in the GNAC while Anna Maria climbs to 5-12 and 2-4 (GNAC).

Game One: Anna Maria College 9, Rivier University 0 (Final)

The Rivier offense got seven hits but were unable to score a run as Anna Maria's Joshua Creamer toss a complete game shutout in the 9-0 Amcat victory.

Sophomore Taylor Black (Springfield, Mass.) had the productive first game as he went 2-for-3 with a 2B and junior JJ Montello (Nashua, NH) added a double of his own as he finished 1-for-3. Sophomore Nicholas Pica (Hampstead, NH) got the start for Rivier and allowed Anna Maria to score 7 earned runs over five innings of work and eight strikeouts. Sophomore Spencer Aguiar (Malden, Mass.) allowed two runs in two innings of relief.

The big hit of the game was by Anna Maria's Matthew Leahey. Leahey broke the game open with his first Home Run of the season, a grand slam in the fifth inning to push the Amcat lead to seven runs. Creamer also added a 3-for-4 day at the dish and Corey McNair provided a two hit game from the eight spot in the lineup.

Game Two: Anna Maria College 5, Rivier University 0 (Final)

Sophomore Eddie Soucie (South Ryegate, Vermont) allowed just three earned runs over 5.2 innings but the Raider offense was unable to score a run in the 5-0 finale of the day's double-header.

Soucie gave up five runs total and seven hits on the afternoon. Junior Lucas Palma (Bristol, Conn.) tossed the final 1.1 innings allowing just one hit and recording a strikeout. Montello and Black each went 1-for-3 in the contest while sophomore Jeremy Ball (Swanzey, NH) had himself a 1-for-2 showing. Sophomore Michael Janerico (Waquoit, Mass.) went 1-for-2 with a walk in the loss.

Leahey got the start on the mound in game two and held the Raiders to just four hits as he pitched 5.1 innings, striking out five and walking three batters. He departed in the sixth inning with the bases loaded but reliever Lucas Davis was able to escape the jam and earn his first save of the season. Leahey, McNair and Corey Andrade all recorded two hit games with Dave Julian lifting two sacrifice flies for 2 RBI.

There will be no time off for the men in blue as the Raiders will return to action tomorrow evening as they battle Fisher College in a 7pm contest at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass. Anna Maria will enjoy a day off before hosting Norwich University on Tuesday afternoon (2pm start time).
