Baseball drops season opener, 4-1 at Gallaudet

(Washington, DC) For the first time this season the Rivier University Baseball team was able to get outside and see a baseball field. In their 2014 season opener, the Raiders fell to Gallaudet University 4-1.

Junior Alex Mears (Salem, NH) pitched six solid innings in his Raider debut allowing 4 earned runs on six hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. Sophomores Edward Soucie (South Ryegate, Vermont) and Spencer Aguiar (Malden, Mass.) struckout three over the final two innings on the mound for Rivier. Sophomore Marc Medeiros (Arlington, Mass.) led the way offensively as he went 3-for-5 with a double and run scored. Junior JJ Montello (Nashua, NH) had the lone RBI as he doubled in Medeiros in the third. Junior David Cusack (Newburyport, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Black (Springfield, Mass.) also recorded hits for Rivier.

Gallaudet did most of their damage in the fifth inning as they plated three runs off of Mears. JJ Klein and William Bissell combined to go 4-for-8 with two runs scored and a RBI while Chris Guinn added two hits and two RBI along with pitching six innings of one run ball.

Guinn earned the win for the Bison while Mears suffers his first loss of 2014.

Rivier will be back at it tomorrow as they travel up to Aberdeen, Maryland to take on #18 Johns Hopkins University in a 12pm double-header at the Ripken Complex.
