Raiders roll to fifth straight victory with 16 point win over Lyndon State

(Nashua, NH) The Rivier University Women's Basketball team used a 42 point first half as they continue to remain red-hot in their 73-57 win over Lyndon State College this evening at the Muldoon Gymnasium. The victory is Rivier's fifth in a row and they improve to 5-2 on the young season.

The Hornets defense held the explosive Rivier offense in check over the opening four minutes as they held an 8-2 lead before Raiders Head Coach Paul Williams called a timeout. It seemed to work as the Raiders proceeded to go on a 24-11 run over the next 10 minutes, highlighted by junior Britney Lane's (Waterford, Maine) two 3-pointers, to give Rivier a 26-13 lead. Rivier then took a 19 point lead into the locker room as they were able to rattle off a 16-10 run to close out the frame. Junior A.J. Guidi (Derry, NH) scored 13 first half points to pace the Raiders while senior Donna Lawson (Irasburg, Vermont) led Lyndon State with 7 points.

Head Coach Vinnie Maloney got his troops geared for the second half as they came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders. Behind a strong showing from junior Chelsea Watson (Eliot, Maine), who scored 11 points – including three 3-pointers – within the first seven minutes, the Hornets were able to go on a 14-0 run to close the deficit to just five. That would be as close as they would get as the Raiders proved to be too strong down the stretch as Rivier scored 30 points over the remaining 13 minutes to earn their fifth win of the season.

The Raiders were led by Guidi, who netted a game high 20 points – despite shooting just 1-for-9 from beyond the arc. Recently named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, sophomore Deanna Purcell (Hudson, NH) added 17 points while junior Laura Yesu (Longmeadow, MA) had 9 points and 10 rebounds. Guidi also collected 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double performance.

Lyndon State was paced by two 14 point nights from Watson and freshman Aimee Thompson (Bradford, Vermont). Thompson also pulled down 10 of the teams 33 rebounds to record a double-double.

With the loss, Lyndon State falls to 1-4 on the season and has now dropped 3 straight decisions.

Rivier will travel to Lynn, Massachusetts to take on Fisher College, a NAIA school out of Boston, MA, in their next scheduled contest on Wednesday evening (7pm start). Lyndon State will host Johnston State in a North Atlantic Conference contest at the Stannard Gymnasium beginning at 1pm on Saturday, December 8th.
