Softball Clinches Two Wins Over Pilgrims

GAME ONE:

NASHUA, NH: Rivier softball won against New England College today in non-conference action at Raider Diamond.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/13/23

- Score: Rivier 5, NEC 4

- Records: Rivier (9-16, 2-4 GNAC), NEC (9-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Raiders put one run on the board in the first inning due to an error giving Courtney Marioles (Hudson, NH) the opportunity to touch home plate.

- In the second inning, Haley Rapaglia (Methuen, MA) homered to left center putting Riv up 2-0.

- The Pilgrims were unable to score until the fifth inning when Julia Maker reached first base on an error, which caused Monica Andrade to cross the plate. Destiny Helmedach of NEC sent the ball into right field, sending Ashleigh Lemay home, to tie the score at 2-2. Taylor Maher launched a double down the left field line pushing two Pilgrims home to take the lead, 4-2.

- In the bottom of the seventh inning, Raiders' Kayla Miles (Londonderry, NH) blasted a two-run homerun to right center to tie the game. Christina Panagiotopoulos (Lowell, MA) had the walk off hit for Rivier to win the game.

- Nicole Verrette (Haverhill, MA) of Rivier pitched the full seven, earning six strikeouts to take the win. Houstyn McConaghy of NEC was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Rapaglia was 2-for-3, with 1 RBI and 1 run

- Panagiotopoulos was 2-for-4, with 1 RBI

- Miles was 1-for-3, with 2 RBIs and 1 run

GAME TWO:

- Records: Rivier (10-16, 2-4 GNAC), NEC (9-13)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the bottom of the first inning, Haley Rapaglia (Methuen, MA) earned a base hit which led to the Pilgrims making an error, giving Kylee Caetano (New Bedford, MA) enough time to cross the plate.

- No runs were scored again until the seventh inning. Jasmin Alvarado of NEC singled to right field, gaining an RBI, and tying the game. In the bottom of the seventh, Courtney Marioles (Hudson, NH) was thrown into the game to pinch hit which worked in the Raiders favor. She hit the game winning triple and then ended up scoring the game winning run on a throwing error made by the Pilgrims second baseman.

- Sydney Greeno (Shirley, MA) of Rivier pitched the full seven, earning 10 strikeouts and claiming the win. Emily Farone is handed the loss for NEC.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Caetano was 2-for-3, with 1 run

- Rapaglia was 1-for-3, with 1 RBI

- Marioles was 1-for-1 with 1 run

- Rivier softball will travel to face Anna Maria College Saturday at 12:00PM and 2:00pm in conference play.
