Archambault helps Men's Soccer to scoreless tie with Norwich

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Men's Soccer team earned a very important point this evening as they keep their playoff hopes alive with a scoreless tie against Norwich University at Raider Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action. Prior to the start of the contest, the Raiders honored seniors Alex Bourdeau (Alton Bay, N.H.), Lucas Palma (Bristol, Conn.) and Danny Connelly (Bedford, N.H.) for their loyal service in blue and white.

The game was a rough and physical one as there were a total of 24 fouls and 5 yellow cards throughout the 110 minutes of action.

Norwich had plenty of chances in the contest to put themselves on the board. However Rivier sophomore goalkeeper Gary Archambault (Auburn, N.H.) was able to turn away all 16 shots on net. The defensive grouping of sophomores Jack Blessing (Wakefield, R.I.), Anthony Capozzi (Windham, N.H.), junior Peter Juneau (Rochester, N.H.) and freshman Alex Baker (Danvers, Mass.) were able to help keep the Cadets shots contested.

The Raiders had limited chances to gain the extra point but their best opportunity came in the 73rd minute when junior Edward Soucie (South Ryegate, Vt.) was able to put a nice touch pass to set up sophomore Alex Armstrong (Wakefield, R.I.) for the one-timer but Norwich goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom was able to get a hand on the ball and send it wide of the net.

With the tie, the Raiders are now 1-11-1 on the season with a 1-5-1 mark in the GNAC. Norwich sees there record slide to 10-4-2 and 4-1-2 in the GNAC.

The next matchup for Rivier might as well be considered a playoff game as they travel to Anna Maria College on Wednesday, October 22nd. The AMCATS are currently at 2-5-0 in the GNAC and a win against them will push the Raiders closer to the #8 seed.

Norwich, who is currently 2nd in the GNAC, will travel to Boston, Mass. to battle Emmanuel College – also on October 22nd.
