Field Hockey drops a 4-0 decision to Fitchburg State

(Nashua, NH) In game that lasted over a week, it was the Fitchburg State Falcons who outlasted the Rivier University Raiders in Field Hockey action at Raider Field. The game originally started at 7pm on Thursday, September 12 but with 20:09 remaining the game was suspended due to lighting and was resumed this evening.

When it was all said and done, the Falcons defeated the Raiders 4-0.

It was an evenly matched game throughout the first half as both Rivier's Makenzie Flagg (Shirley, MA) and Fitchburg State's Lucy Holewa went save for save as things were scoreless through the first 30 minutes of action. The Falcons were able to get a great bounce as a shot from Kaitlyn Silva was able to trickle past Flagg for a 1-0 FSU advantage. Mallory Griczkia assisted on the goal from Silva.

As the second half began, so did the offensive power from the Falcons. They were able to quickly score three goals in less than 8 minutes to jump out to a 4-0 lead with 27 minutes to play. Julia Pecoraro, Madeline Hoffman and Stephanie Stearns all netted unassisted tallies during that span.

The game was halted with 20:09 remaining to play as the officials suspended play to the lighting activity in the area around Raider Field. It turned out to be a good call as a heavy rain storm came rolling in about 10 minutes after the stoppage.

Fast forward over a week and the remaining 20 minutes were played tonight and the game remained 4-0 in favor of the visitors when the final horn sounded.

The Raiders were outshot in the game by a 16-9 difference. Flagg finished the game with 7 saves on 10 shots and sophomore Danielle Moran (San Diego, CA) spent 9 minutes in net allowing a goal and making two saves. Holewa was successful on all 7 shots she faced and Judith Valentin was able to see zero shots in her 4:51 in between the pipes.

Next up for the Raiders will be Bay Path College on Thursday night at Raider Field with a 7pm start time. Fitchburg State will also be in action on Thursday as they have a 4pm game at Becker College in Worcester, Mass.
