Raiders Knock Off Two Top 10 Teams At Golden Flyer Invitational

Rochester, NY - #10 Rivier College (13-5 overall; 3-0 GNAC) traveled to Rochester New York for the Nazareth College Golden Flyer Invitational and returned home with a 3-1 record on the weekend. The Raiders swept the first day of matches with a 3-2 win over Thiel College (24-26, 25-21, 25-14, 27-29, 15-9) and a convincing 3-0 win over #4 Nazareth College (25-16, 32-30, 25-13). On Day 2 Rivier picked up a split with a lackluster 0-3 loss to #3 UC Santa Cruz (16-25, 19-25, 22-25) and a gritty 3-2 win over #8 Medaille College (17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12).

Senior Jared Andreozzi (Barrington, RI) and sophomore setter Steve Visentin (Cheshire, CT) were named to the Golden Flyer All Invitational Team. Andreozzi put down 4.7 kills/set on the weekend while hitting for a .338%. The 6'4 outside hitter played well on defense as well with 36 digs and 10 blocks.

Visentin directed the Raider offense all weekend dishing out 10.4 assists/set including 32 assists and a season best .450 team hitting percentage against #4 Nazareth.

Junior Drew Corwin (Sudbury, MA) led all Raider defenders with 38 digs while first year big man Aaron Almario (Alhambra, CT) led all blockers with 24 blocks and a 1.6 blocks/set average. Sophomore middle hitter Taylor Lindner (Cheshire, CT) registered 28 kills and 9 blocks while junior swing player Alex Xenidis (Shelton, CT) scored 20 kills and 7 blocks. First year outside hitter Sam Kazlas (Allentown, PA) played well with 28 kills in just 10 sets.

Rivier will pick up GNAC play with a 7:00pm match on Wednesday 2/16 at Johnson & Wales University followed by a Muldoon double header on Thursday 2/17 against Emerson College and Mount Ida College. Game times for Thursday are 6pm and 8pm.
