Men’s Lacrosse Edges AMCATS

NASHUA, NH: Rivier men's lacrosse won against Anna Maria College this evening in conference action on Joanne Merrill Field.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/25/23

- Score: Rivier 19, Anna Maria 6

- Records: Rivier (12-3, 8-2 GNAC), Anna Maria (2-15, 1-9 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- River put away seven goals in the first quarter and was able to keep the AMCATS to one goal. Rivier's goals were scored by Coby Mercier (Boscawen, NH), Nicholas Tavares (Danvers, MA) from Michael Ference (Salem, NH), Ference on a man up opportunity from Connor Eck (Franklin, MA), Tavares from Potter, Potter with two man up goals both assisted by Mercier, and Eck on a man up from Potter. Anna Maria's single goal was credited to Hank Gittines with an assist from Liam Bedenkop.

- In the second quarter, Riv and Anna Maria each scored three goals. The AMCATS came out strong earning the first two, scored by Gittines from Ethan Quinn and Ricky Rosado from Quinn. The Raiders answered back with their own two goals scored by Sean Callinan (Shelton, CT) from Ference and then Eck from Ference. Gittines went on to score his third goal of the game for Anna Maria. Mercier closed out the half with a goal assisted by Ference for the Raiders. On that goal, Ference recorded his 200th point. 

- Riv's Potter got the scoring started in the third with a man up goal with the assist granted to Mercier. Tavares followed by adding on a Raiders goal with an assist from Joseph O'Reilly (New Castle, NH). Ference passed to Chris Heitmiller (Nashua, NH) who tossed in a Rivier goal. Jeff Robinson of Anna Maria passed by the Riv defenders to score at 6:41 on the clock. Eck scored with an assist from Tavares, putting the Raiders up 14-5. Tommy Giard of the AMCATS netted a goal with an assist credited to Liam Bedenkop. Heitmiller added on a Riv goal with 24 seconds left in the third, with an assist granted to Potter.

- The Raiders shut down the AMCATS in the fourth quarter. Rivier scored four goals earned by Potter, Tavares, Sawyer Hall (Windham, NH), and Alan Cozzolino (Hamden, CT) assisted by Michael Zapatka (Newington, CT).

- Gagnon of Rivier took the win and collected 11 saves this evening. Matthew Peicker of Anna Maria was flagged with the loss, saving 13 shots.

- Ground Balls: Rivier 41, Anna Maria 33

- Penalties: Rivier 11 minutes 30 seconds on 12 infractions, Anna Maria 8 minutes on 7 infractions
