Men’s Lacrosse Edges Leopards

NASHUA, NH: Rivier men's lacrosse won against Wentworth Institute of Technology this afternoon in non-conference play on Joanne Merrill Field.   

THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/18/23

- Score: Rivier 10, Wentworth 6

- Records: Rivier (4-1, 0-0 GNAC), Wentworth (2-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Raiders dominated the first quarter with four goals, all unanswered by the Leopards. In the first minute of the game Coby Mercier (Boscawen, NH) passed to Chris Heitmiller (Nashua, NH) which resulted in a Rivier goal. Connor Eck (Franklin, MA) put away goal number two for the Raiders, with an assist credited to Nicholas Tavares (Danvers, MA). Mercier added on an unassisted goal at 5:02, putting Riv up 3-0. Michael Ference (Salem, NH) tossed the ball to Jeffery Potter (North Bennington, VT) who buried another Raiders goal.

- 42 seconds into the second quarter, Potter capitalized on the man up opportunity to earn his second goal of the contest with an assist granted to Eck. Logan Maklan was able to get Wentworth on the board with an assist from Colin Ocampo. About 40 seconds later, Liam Carroll of the Leopards squeezed by the Riv defenders to record a goal. Tavares of Rivier replied with a goal, the assist was credited to Potter. Ference took advantage on the man up opportunity to add on a Riv goal with an assist from Mercier. Leopards' Drew Bouley and Tyler Hoar had back-to-back goals just over a minute apart with an assist from Ocampo on Hoar's goal. Eck of Rivier ends the quarter rocketing in a goal, with an assist granted to Ference.

- Tavares put the Raiders up 9-4 at 4:35 in the third quarter, assist from Ference. Erik Vogt passed to Maklan who scored a man up goal for Wentworth.

- Maklan secured the Leopards final goal of the game in the fourth quarter. Raiders' Tavares scored again, earning a hat trick, and increasing the score to 10-6.

- Sawyer Gagnon (Gorham, ME) of Rivier saved 22 shots today, taking the win. Ryan Kalberer of Wentworth had nine saves in goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Shots: Wentworth 44, Rivier 35

- Ground Balls: Wentworth 41, Rivier 37

- Penalties: Wentworth 3 minutes on 3 infractions, Rivier 2 minutes 30 seconds on 3 infractions
