Parent's goal lifts Raiders over Saint Joseph's (CT)

(Nashua, NH) The Rivier College Raiders recorded their first GNAC victory of 2011 today as they defeated Saint Joseph's College (CT), 2-1 in double overtime.

Saint Joseph's (7-3 overall, 5-2 GNAC) got on the board first when Stacey Rutledge edged one by Rivier sophomore goalkeeper Christine Surber (Langdon, NH) just inside the 22 minute mark. She was assisted on the goal by Tiana Saraceno and Patricia Nolan). However Surber made sure that it would be the only goal.

Late in the second half, Rivier (3-6-1, 1-4 GNAC) was applying pressure with multiple chances. They finally caught a break in the 84th minute when sophomore Hillary Hee (Colchester, VT) took a pass from classmate Rebecca Wickens (Tyngsboro, MA) and buried it just inside the far post to tie the game. It was Hee's 2nd goal of the season.

The teams remained scoreless through the first overtime which set the stage for the dramatic golden goal. Sophomore Christina Parent (Loudon, NH) netted the game winner as she lifted a shot from outside the 18. The ball seemed to hang in the air long enough to avoid the hands of the outstretched Saint Joseph's goalkeeper. The goal was Parent's second of the season.

The Raiders will enjoy a few days off before they host Mount Ida College in a GNAC game on Wednesday, October 5th. Saint Joseph's will travel to Johnson and Wales University for their next match on Wednesday in a GNAC contest.
