New England College defeats Rivier, 3-2 in Women's Soccer Action

New London, NH - Sophomore Lauren Tamposi (Hollis, NH/Guild Academy) netted two goals, however that was not enough as New England College defeated Rivier, 3-2 in the 2011 Colby-Sawyer Labor Day Tournament.

Both teams came out strong to begin the game as the score was 0-0 after the first 45 minutes of action.

Rivier would get on the board first in the second half. Inside the 47th minute, sophomore Mariah Payne (Concord, NH/Concord) chipped one from the right flank and sent it across the box. Tamposi, who was on the far side post, alertly jumped up and headed the ball into the back of the net.

The 1-0 Rivier lead was short lived as New England College answered right back with a goal from Kristen Walker (Franklin, MA/Franklin). The Pilgrims would eventually take the lead inside the 68th minute when Veronica Hytner (St. James, NY/St Johns the Baptist) shot one past sophomore Christine Surber (Langdon, NH/Fall Mountain) from 25 yards out. Hytner would add her second goal just 1:54 later to give New England College a 3-1 lead.

Trailing by two, the Rivier Women did not stop working. Tamposi would score her second goal of the game inside the 86th minute when she came down field on a breakaway and buried the shot into the net.

Rivier's defense played well all game as they limited the Pilgrims to just 8 shots on goal. Surber made five saves in the loss.

After playing three games in four days, the Women's Soccer team will enjoy the next five days off. They are scheduled to take on GNAC Conference opponent Emmanuel College on Saturday, September 10th. Kick off will be at 3pm at Raider Field on the campus of Rivier College.
