MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Seniors Hannah Muchemore and Lyric Grumblatt combined for 41 points in a 79-57 victory for the Rivier women's basketball team over Salve Regina on night one of the Courtyard by Marriot Classic, hosted by Wesleyan, at Silloway Gymnasium.
The victory ended a nine-game losing streak against Salve Regina, as the Raiders improved to 3-5, while the Seahawks dropped to 5-4.
After narrowly trailing for most of the first half, Rivier took the lead for good starting with a Muchemore three-pointer off of a turnover with 1:55 left. This steal and score jumpstarted a 10-0 run to end the half, giving Rivier a 43-34 lead at the break.
A step-back triple from Muchemore in the final seconds of the third gave Riv its largest lead of the contest to that point, 63-48, and jumpstarted a 15-0 run over a 4:13 stretch spanning the two quarters to make it a 27-point game, allowing the Raiders to cruise to victory.
Muchemore finished with a 21-point, 12-assist double-double, going 7-of-9 (77.8%) from the floor while hitting 5-of-7 from deep (71.4%). Grumblatt scored 20 points while nabbing 13 boards in the team's second of two double-doubles. Fellow seniors Alexa Dufries and Rachel Guinn each recorded double-digit point totals with 11 and 10, respectively.
Rivier shot 52.2% from three-point range as a team, draining 12 of its 23 attempts.
The Raiders round out their tournament slate on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1:00 p.m. back at Silloway Gymnasium in a matchup with Utica.
