Women’s Basketball Drops GNAC Contest to Albertus Magnus, 76-64

NASHUA, N.H. — The Rivier women's basketball team suffered its second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss of the season at the hands of Albertus Magnus on Saturday afternoon at the Muldoon Center, 76-64.

With the loss, the Raiders dropped to 9-9 (5-2 GNAC) while the Falcons improved to 10-8 (5-2 GNAC).

With the game tied at 6-6 with 6:11 remaining in the first quarter, Albertus Magnus drained three consecutive three-pointers to take a 15-6 lead halfway through the period. Senior Alexa Dufries stopped the run with a three-pointer of her own, but the Falcons responded with four straight points, pushing their lead to 19-9 with 2:55 left in the quarter. A late three-pointer from graduate student Hannah Muchemore helped trim the deficit to 21-14 at the end of the first quarter.

A layup from first-year Sydney Perry and a three-pointer from Jessica Carrier brought the lead down to five, but the Falcons responded with a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the half at 35-21 with 4:14 remaining. Graduate student Lyric Grumblatt scored the final eight points of the half, but Albertus Magnus still held a 40-29 lead at the break.

The two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the third quarter. A layup from Alyssa Scharn cut the deficit to single digits at 49-40, but the Falcons responded with an 8-3 run to extend their lead to 14 heading into the final frame. Despite several late attempts, the Raiders were unable to chip away at the Falcons' lead, ultimately falling 76-64.

Grumblatt recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 27 points and 13 rebounds on 10-of-19 (52.6%) shooting from the field. Muchemore added 13 points and a team-high six assists. First-year Gianna Donato chipped in 8 points and three rebounds, while Carrier and Dufries each contributed five points. Scharn led the team defensively, recording three steals.

The Raiders begin a three-game road stretch on Wednesday, Jan. 29, as they face Lasell at the Lasell Athletic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
